Conclusion.

_____________________________________________

Perceptions of occupational therapy from preschool teachers: a mixed descriptive study

Context. Occupational therapy in preschool setting offers the opportunity to enhance students’ global developmental and participation, as well as to support teachers in their mandate. Yet, the various and emerging roles of school-based occupational therapy are misunderstood, thus limiting the collaboration between preschool teachers and occupational therapists. Moreover, few studies specifically explored teachers’ perceptions in regard to roles and effects of occupational therapy.

Objective. The purpose of this study was to describe teachers’ perceptions of occupational therapy in kindergarten.

Methods. 311 kindergarten teachers from different regions of the province of Quebec responded to an online survey, consisting mostly of closed-ended questions.

Results. Most of the teachers (52 %) who answered the survey had previously collaborated with an occupational therapist or trainees in occupational therapy and were generally satisfied (78 %) with the services received. The expertise of the occupational therapist related to motor skills, participation and sensory information processing were acknowledged by teachers. Primary roles of occupational therapists identified by teachers include screening students and supporting teachers. Barriers, facilitators and recommendations for collaboration between preschool teachers and occupational therapists are also discussed.

Conclusion. This study highlights the necessity to promote occupational therapy in preschool setting as well as to adjust the way this type of services are offered to better meet teachers’ needs.
ER -
